With headlines of violence dominating the news, we hear too little about Chicago’s young people serving their communitites. Heroes in the ‘Hood, sponsored by GO Airport Express, the Chicago Crusader, Dominick’s, and the DuSable Museum of African American History, is trying to change that. What is Heroes in the ‘Hood?
Since 1993, “Heroes” has recognized and honored Chicago youth who donate their time and talents to make a positive difference in their communities.
What kind of service qualifies?
Past winners have tutored younger children, visited senior citizens, volunteered at homeless shelters, organized community health fairs and food drives - projects that makes a difference in their community or in the lives of others.
What are the entrance qualifications?
The nominee must be between the ages of 13 and 18, live in the city of Chicago, and have performed community service in 2009.
How do I submit a nomination?
Easy, just click here to fill out the individual application and click here to fill out the group application. (Deadline is March 17.) You MUST fill out either a group or individual application.
Note: two individual nominations and one group nomination per school.
How do I know if my nominee(s) win?
All nominees will be invited to the award ceremony held at the DuSable Museum on Thursday, April 15 where the winners will be announced. Awards are given to both individuals and groups.
What do winners receive?
- Trip to Springfield, IL to visit our state capitol in May.
- Plaque or certificate honoring their achievement.
- Media coverage in the Chicago Crusader and other news outlets.
- T-shirt and “goodie bags.”
